When I was still in training, I could not forget when a nurse commented that breastfeeding is only for charity patients who cannot afford to buy milk formula. I don’t know where she got that distorted notion.

When I gave birth to my firstborn, my mother in law had her first major “tampo” when I did not obey her advise to put bigkis (binder) around my newborn son’s waist. She said it’s necessary to “avoid kabag”, “keep tummy flat when he gets older” and so on.

“It’s cultural.” This was the simple reply that my Singapore-based cousin got when she asked her pediatrician what to give her then 15 month old son. My cousin was complaining to me that he was not as accommodating as Filipino doctors. But that is another story.
